All you have to do is plug in the power, then plug in the USB cable and you're up and running. I have three of these drives (1TB, 2TB and 3TB) and I am trying to keep up with all my backups. Funny, but I'm a photographer and as my sensors have grown in megapixels, so has my need for more and more back up space. I probably should backup more to DVD, but it's kind of time consuming. I used to use LaCie drives (don't buy them!!!!) but they were horrible. By comparison, these are fantastic.

Am upgrading my review to 3 stars because I finally got the drive to work and it seems OK. WD tech support told me that the reason the drive would mount/unmount is that their disk utility program that comes with the drive and that you are prompted to install has a serious bug that makes the drive unusable (on some Macs? The only way I could get the drive to work was to erase it (using a different laptop) and then reformat it as a regular journaled HD. So if you buy this thing, consider anything extra you're paying for out-of-the-box Time Machine hookup or WD's diagnostic utility a complete waste. That said, even without the useless addenda from WD, this 3TB drive is not overpriced.

A WD 'Level 2' technician then miss-diagnosed the problem. I later found the solution on my own by changing ports I was using for this WD HD from an AC-powered docking station port that had worked fine with an older WD HD I was replacing to a port on an AC-powered USB 3.0 hub I had recently bought from B&H.
